16 August 2009 Marks Tey report

Words by Matt Valentine 16 August 2009

On Sunday 16th August 2009 the Pre 65 Motocross Club held round seven of the 2009 calendar at Marks Tey in Essex. The 109 solos and 16 sidecar crews entered would be tested once again as the track had been reverted to its usual anti-clockwise direction. With very little rain over the week leading up to the event, track watering was vital to keep the dust at bay for the 30 race schedule.

In leg one of the Perry Miller Anglian People Carriers Sidecar Championship the line up was depleted by two outfits following an early morning crash by the pairing of Chris and Steve Tye, and machine failure for Michael and Susannah Mead.

This allowed the pairing of Chris Batt and Nat Seeley to take the win after they came through the field from fourth place at the start of the race, second place went to Nick Leatherhead with passenger Glen Restrick and coming home in third was Dickie Skinner and Kate Collins. Fourth and fifth places went to Keith and Jack Pattison and Ivan Barker and Keith Potter, they were followed home in sixth by the French outfit of Pierre and Germar Sacchettini.

Les Robinson took overall victory in the Pre-60 Percy Tawn Memorial Trophy aboard his TriBSA. Leg two saw Skinner and Collins generously lend Michael and Susannah Mead there outfit so they could salvage some points in the championship.

Batt and Seeley gated well this time and took the lead before the end of the opening lap and rode a controlled race to take a second moto win. Second again was Leatherhead and Restrick, this time the Sacchettini pairing finished third with Barker and Potter coming home in fourth. Ray and Stephen Tawn held off Terry and Allyson Mead for fifth and sixth place respectively.

In leg one of the Pre 60 Percy Tawn Memorial trophy Les Robinson took his 500cc TriBSA to victory, second went to Colchester based rider Sam Appleton with Richard Talbot in third. Jim Aim finished fourth ahead of Jon Baldwin and home in sixth place was Steve Kinnard on the BSA Goldstar.

Leg two was a great win for Aim giving him third overall on the day, second again went to Appleton on the BSA C15 with Robinson coming home in third place to take the overall in this Class. Fourth place went to Kinnard with Dave Godley on his 500cc MABSA finishing fifth, Baldwin rounded out the top six.

Leg one of the Brockwell Group National Greeves Championship was won by Greg Radley on the 250cc Challenger following a great ride through the field, second went to series leader Danny Albins with early race leader Matt Valentine home in third. Fourth and fifth went to Ricky Widdowson ahead of Gary Smith, with ex speedway star Graeme Smith rounding out the top six.

In the second leg Gary Smith led from start to finish with Albins getting the better of Radley for second and third. Fourth again was Widdowson with Valentine chasing home in fifth. Graeme Smith finished a creditable sixth.

In the Pre 68 up to 350cc Class two heat wins for Glen Davey and one heat win for Greg Radley could not stop Nick Archer on his 250cc BSA taking the overall victory. Second in this class went to Tony Coomer with Dave Holt taking third overall. Davey and Radley took forth and fifth overall respectively. Rob Daffey completed the top six.

The overall in the Pre 68 over 350cc Class went to Ipswich based rider Dan Howe with two heat wins, second overall went to Glen Davey who won the third leg. Third overall went to Les Robinson with Nick Archer and Jim Aim finishing in fourth and fifth place. Sixth went to Danny Albins on the Jawa Metisse.

The Pre 74 class which is normally dominated by the European two stroke machines was again an overall victory for Howe on his four stroke Cheney BSA with two heat wins in this class, making it four wins for the day. The other leg in this class went to Tiptree based rider Terry Thompson which meant he took second overall from the Greeves trio of Valentine, Widdowson and Gary Smith in third, fourth and fifth. Six overall in this class went to Ben Archer on the Bultaco Pursang.

In the clubman class, for riders that are out for a day of fun, Roy Crisp took four out of five race wins to take the overall. Alan Humphrey took second overall with the Greeves Championship sponsor Tony Brockwell rounding out the top three with a win in the final leg.
