On Sunday 19th July the Pre-65 Motocross Club held round six of its 2009 classic scrambles calendar at Marks Tey in Essex. A new track design and running in a clockwise direction ensured the track was totally different from a month ago when round five was held here. Track watering and an overnight shower had left the track looking superb for the day ahead. This was all set to change as following practice and the first two races the heavens opened and the downpour during race three left the track very slippery and meant that racing lines from practice had to change if riders were going to keep the bikes on two wheels.
Pre 68 over 350cc class
Race one was dominated by Glenn Davey, second went to John Bateup with Sam Appleton following home in third, Nick Archer with Danny Albins in tow finished fourth and fifth with Cliff Freed rounding out the top six.
Race two was another win for Glenn Davey, Nick Archer got the better of John Bateup and Sam Appleton for second, third and fourth. Wayne Bronze and Dave Godley completed the top Six.
Pre 68 up to 350cc class
During race one the main rain shower of the day hit the riders on track and the conditions and race positions quickly changed. Glenn Davey held on to his lead and continued to dominate this class. A great ride in the conditions saw Ben Archer come home in second, third and fourth went to Gary Smith and Adrian Mays.
Race two was another win for Glenn Davey his fourth victory of the day, this time Gary Smith was second with young Scott Chappell having a brilliant ride in third.
Pre 74 Class
Race one was run just after the major downpour so the riders that stayed upright would challenge for the win. Gary Smith borrowed his father’s 380cc Greeves Griffon and showing his skills in the wet conditions had a great battle with the more experienced Norman Capsitck to take victory in this race. Capstick held on to second from the fast approaching Dan Howe in third. Fourth went to Matt Valentine with Nick Carter and Terry Thompson coming home in fifth and sixth.
Race two was in the waiting box as the second of the days showers came down which meant that again these riders would have to show there skills in the slippery conditions. This was a nail biting race and as the leading trio left the final corner and headed for the line they were almost three abreast with Nick Carter snatching the win from Norman Capstick and Matt Valentine in third. Fourth went to Terry Thompson with Dan Howe home in fifth ahead of Graham Cooper.
Pre 60 – Percy Tawn Championship
When the wet weather hits a track its not all about who has the fastest bike but who can ride there bike the fastest in the conditions. This really showed in race one as Sam Appleton on the smaller machine triumphed over his competitors on large machines. Second went to John Bateup, with Dave Godley and Richard Talbot coming home in third and fourth. Fifth went to Kim Morley on the Greeves Hawkstone, with Adrian Dickerson finishing sixth.
Race two saw race one winner Sam Appleton crashing out, this left John Bateup with the win ahead of Dave Godley, third and fourth went to Richard Talbot and Dave Savill. Home in fifth and sixth was Steve Chappell and Richard Aris.
Brockwell Group National Greeves Championship
With the reigning champion Ian Webster still out with injury and the series leader Greg Radley giving up his ride to fulfil Clerk of the Course Duties this left the way for the other championship riders to show there skills and battle for the win, and they did just that.
Race one was a cracker with Mark Cooper and Gary Smith battling for the lead and exchanging places on many occasions. As they battled up front Danny Albins was holding off a challenge for third from Matt Valentine. As the last lap unfolded no place was safe and as Valentine was trying to pass Albins for third the pair of them had caught cooper in second. Places were exchanged over the last two corners with some super racing and as they crossed the line it was Smith, from Albins with Valentine in third and Cooper in fourth. Ricky Widdowson recovered well to fifth place after a big mistake over the table top with Dave Godley rounding out the top six.
After the events in race one everyone was hoping for the same in race two. Luckily the riders did not disappoint with the top five from race one all at the front in race two. Drama struck race one winner Gary Smith and a thrown chain saw him out of the race, this left Albins and Cooper battling for the lead. As the leaders came towards the final corner a lapped rider would decide the outcome of the race with Cooper held up this allowed Valentine to pass and at the line it was Albins with the win, ahead of Valentine and Cooper in third with Widdowson home in fourth. Kim Morley had a good ride to fifth place with Steve Gollings on a little 250cc Griffon rounding out the top six.
Perry Miller Anglian People Carriers Championship
The sidecars are always a highlight of any race meeting when two people have to work in tandem to get one machine to go as fast as possible.
In race one Chris Batt and Nathan Seeley got out in front and held on to the win, second went to Dickie Skinner with Kate Collins on board. Third place went to Keith and Jack Pattison with Mike Wells and Kev Mullins home in fourth. Fifth and sixth places went to Paul Kimble and passenger Alec Leask followed by Charles and Russ Chivers.
Race two saw a win for the Skinner and Collins outfit, followed home by the brother and sister pairing of Michael and Sue Mead. Third went to Nick Leatherland and passenger Restrick with the Pattisons home in fourth. Wells and Mullins crossed the line in fifth with Mick Lawrence and Richard Brinsden rounding out the top six.
